Announcing My First Novel, Giant Slugs

My first novel, Giant Slugs, will be published later this month by Lawrence and Gibson, New Zealand.

Of it, others have said:

Told in a style unlike any other—a dazzling prose-poetry-comedy like some jackdaw Professor of Everything colliding fragments of ancient myth, world culture and modern ephemera into a multi-coloured verbal collage—Giant Slugs is startlingly, refreshingly original and more than a mere novelty.

Michael Kelly, author of Ulrich Haarbürste’s Novel of Roy Orbison in Cling Film

&

“I admire A D Jameson to the point of being disturbed by him.”

Gabriel Gudding, author of Rhode Island Notebook and A Defense of Poetry

From the back cover:

“I lay down and snuggled my way back underneath the afghan, munching on my chubby ape doll’s leafy bittersweet ears. I slept; I dreamt no more. But I never regained the bazaars or resumed the sand chase, and I never embarked on the one-year trip befitting my noble blood. For that night, while I dozed, great Uruk, my home, was invaded by giant slugs.”

Exiled, ousted, put out by those oozing outsized interlopers, denied his true inheritance, his due kingly crown—so begins this epicene narrator’s epichorial wanderings (part epicrisis, part epicedium) in this largely silly, slightly filthy, pun-laden Epicurean retelling of the ages-old Epic of Gilgamesh.

A few excerpts have meanwhile appeared in journals:

  • Action, Yes: “The Walls of Uruk” (from Chapter 1, “The Walls of Uruk”);
  • elimae: “Death Summit” (from Chapter 10, “Black Hunger”);
  • The Collagist: “Dar Williams” (from Chapter 11, “A Drink at the Twilight Ale House”) (forthcoming).

Giant Slugs will be available through Lawrence and Gibson, Amazon, and elsewhere. Thanks in advance to everyone who checks it out!

(And special thanks to Stephanie Nadeau, who provided the cover image, and Shane Fairhall, who did the design.)

  • A. D. Jameson is the author of five books, most recently I FIND YOUR LACK OF FAITH DISTURBING: STAR WARS AND THE TRIUMPH OF GEEK CULTURE and CINEMAPS: AN ATLAS OF 35 GREAT MOVIES (with artist Andrew DeGraff). Last May, he received his Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the Program for Writers at UIC.

  1. AD, wonderful, most wonderful, & heartiest congrats. Put me down for a copy, by all means. (I believe you have the email, but it’s off the website, anyway).

  2. Well I can see that Simonds influence survived into the production of the final cover. The clay looks raw and unfinished. Waiting to be imprinted upon.

    An implied explosion was only my second impression. I wonder if I might have missed it, were it not for the design of the title itself. There is something vaguely militaristic about it, isn’t there? Like something spray applied with a stencil. Those lone three intact brick courses also seem to recall a fortification for me.

    I like it. But I’m a sucker for subtlety.

    I thought the inside cover would be featured here though. You remarked you were quite pleased with it’s design.

    1. Yes, once you put the Simonds bug into my head, I couldn’t get it out.

      I hadn’t made the militaristic connection, but you’re right. To me, the cover looks somewhat ominous (the dark colors are causing that, I think), which is only appropriate, given the menace of the slugs.

      You’ll have to wait to see the inside cover, which does in fact contain a treat. A small treat, but a treat nonetheless. I think it’s a treat.

      Always good to see you at Big Other, Philip! —Adam

  3. Hey! Congrats, and this sounds really good! Can’t wait to get my hands on it. Could you add it to Gooreads.com so I can add it to my shelf? I want other people to find out about it!
