For the last week of their July subscription drive, Artifice Magazine is ramping up the awesome.
Subscribers will be entered in a drawing to win one of several prize packages that include some of the best in current and forthcoming independent lit, including issues of Annalemma, Another Chicago Magazine, Sententia, Pank and Hobart and much-anticipated and or acclaimed books by Lindsay Hunter and Big Other’s own Davis Schneiderman. (Details).
If enough people subscribe today, Artifice editor James Tadd Adcox will MOHAWK HIS HAIR and/or DIE IT A CRAZY COLOR.
This might not seem like such a major incentive to folks outside Chicago, or who are not friends with Tadd, but for those of us who know and love him, CRAZY HAIR ON TADD IS A REALLY BIG DEAL AND WE NEED YOUR HELP.
As John Madera and others have already mentioned in excellent posts and reviews here on Big Other and elsewhere, the first issue of Artifice is one of the single best lit mag issues released this year, maybe ever, and that is not hyperbolic. They are one of the few publications not just publishing work for the sake of it, but to cultivate an aesthetic and expand the boundaries of and conversation about contemporary lit.
They’re also fun.
Also there will be pictures of the mohawk.
I will also shoot Tadd again with a starter pistol, but this time right against his eardrum, as an incentive…
Gosh, and I’M the one he pledged to get back at?
All I did was make him hump a stuffed animal.
I might be in Chicago on Aug. 6th, and if so, and if Tadd has a brightly colored mohawk, I am going to have to find a way to see it.
Let’s have dinner with Christopher Newgent.
Ha. That could work. I’m heading up to hang out with Justin Sirois while he’s in town for a conference. Not sure what we’re planning on doing, but we’re hoping to find something awesome.
I’d be up for dinner. Also I will have a brilliantly-colored mohawk.
Does that mean you got 10?
Am I dying my hair tonight?
Yes we did, and yes you are.
Awesome! Congrats on the successful sub drive, dude!
yay! I’ll get the gun.
Davis is occasionally kind of scary. I mean this in a good way, I think.
Tadd–the persona of the performer may have no correlation to the person behind the curtain. If in fact there is a person at all.
No hay bando.
i think we talked about this in the collaboration seminar at UIC? Don ‘t you recall…?
Can’t wait to see the Mohawk.
If I had enough hair, I’d (secretly) show up with a mohawk. Dang! See you guys there. Dang!
Tadd,
The first issue of Artifice is so good, that I even got my son to read it:

(He’s five months old)…
:)
Thanks, Jessica! Glad he likes it… We like to appeal to the youth culture.
Having just received my copy in the mail, I am quite taken by your stellar design quality and tasty content. I may see you on Friday the 13th, by the way…
