A Sentence About a Sentence I Love, by Laura van den Berg

“My mother was always surprised by time.”

Joy Williams, “Escapes”

A beautiful sentence from an exquisitely heart-breaking story that perfectly renders the mother’s disconnect from the world at large.

  1. Good on yer, Laura, for finding a short, simple sentence and not one suffering from conjunctionitis.

This reminds me of “I was never not mostly afraid,” from “Where the Dark Ended” by William Tester.
