In Honor of Valentine’s Day: Sex!

Innocent bedtime reading?
In honor of Valentine’s Day I will name all of the books with sex scenes I can specifically recall in the next ten minutes, in the order in which they appear in my head:

American Psycho – and then every other Bret Easton Ellis book!

Anais Nin – Little Birds and Delta of Venus!

The Fear Street series!

The opening scene(?) of Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke at the sex addicts meeting!

Henry Miller!

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (with that bowler hat)!

Jeffrey Brown’s comics(so realistic)!

Snow White by Donald Barthelme(times seven)!

Go Ask Alice!

Francesca Lia Block’s Girl Goddess #9!

Yannick Murphy’s Signed Mata Hari!

Cortazar’s Hopscotch!

Dennis Cooper!

Carole Maso’s Ava!

Bolano’s Savage Detectives!

Duras’s Destroy, She Said!

Charles Bukowski!

Equus!

The World According to Garp!

Jeanette Winterson’s Passion!

Lo Lola Lolita!

Sappho!

Phew! That was shorter than I thought.  I stalled a couple times.  OK – well it appears most of those are either books I read when I was 13 or books I read pretty recently, so make of that what you will.

I only included books I’d actually read, though I know there’s some sexy shit in Ulysses and Justine and dozens of others I haven’t gotten through yet (shame, shame).

So why don’t you share your favorites? And I will give you a link to Jack’s Naughty Bits on Nerve, so that you can fill in your literary gaps without having to trudge through all the boring parts. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. Sabbath’s Theater and other Roth
Alicia Erian’s The Brutal Language of Love
    Nick Antosca’s story on Nerve
    lots of Roxane Gay’s fiction

    I’m stuck.

  2. The Bible. The first dirty book my parents bought me.

See, just for instance, the Song of Solomon. But see also the Old Testament in general.

Especially Numbers. Numbers is especially filthy.

Speaking of, and speaking of Roxane (above), and speaking of shameless self-promotion, the story of mine that just appeared in PANK #4, “The Animist,” opens with a sex scene.

    And is biblical.

  3. Yes, I was going to include Song of Solomon, as I indeed spent many an afternoon poring over that, BUT – I could not remember specifics, so i didn’t count it. All of the rest of them, I could at least provide a small detail or the circumstance or something.

  4. My lover and I were reading Hesse and Ginsberg in bed. Oh what does that say about Valentine’s Day?? Ha.
