Archive for December, 2009

Memorable readings/performances of 2009: In no particular order and likely woefully gapingly remiss: AND to be noted that these things are done grudgingly: Because really these lists are bothersome: Implying as they do that all the other moments/efforts are not listworthy: Which really they are: It depends on the filter of the list, no?: BUT if I had [...]

Darby Larson’s Best of 2009

Best ‘AurA’ or sweat and junk. I have to say the library down the street is meatier this year. I finally libraried it then buried it. So I’m harpering all my clothes in their way first, then Beckett-flirting my Steins Faulknerianly, then list my Lish, my Lutz. Best 2, variety, tempo, rubatto. Well, to this [...]

One of my favorite paintings is Au Moulin Rouge by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It lives here in Chicago, at the Art Institute. Lautrec’s paintings capture the lure and alienation of nightlife. On the one-hand, he glorifies performance, artifice, glamor, surfaces (esp. his prints & advertisements for dance halls), on the other, he digs beneath surfaces [...]

Be Realistic

The most difficult kind of fiction to write well is realist fiction.  If you want to really challenge yourself as an author, try writing a straight story.

#2 | #3 | #4 The problem with the internet is that one can read an online article for only so long. After even just a few lines (in fact, right about now), you start getting restless and feel the urge to check out whether Luis Scott-Vargas has uploaded another Magic drafting video at ChannelFireball.com. [...]

Best online story I read this year: Sean Kilpatrick’s “Selections from Sucker June” in Spork, hands down. I adon’t know how Sean does it. If the words just pour out of him like this or if he works really hard at it, but goddamn, this man is obviously a genius. Not to be totally cheesy [...]

Mike Young’s Best of 2009

AWESOME THINGS THAT I ENJOYED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2009 1. Frank Lima Now my third for a holy trinity of Frank poets (the other two being Frank Stanford and Frank O’Hara, with CA Conrad’s hero in the Book of Frank getting a wink), Frank Lima is a woefully underappreciated poet. He’s got Cedar [...]

Aaron Burch’s Best of 2009

My “Top Ten” of 2009 This list is book-heavy because, well, because this is (primarily?) a lit blog, and books are (primarily) the world in which I live. I tried to limit it to stuff that came out/happened in 2009, which discluded many of the books that I read, and TV shows I watched on [...]

Peter Cole’s Best of 2009

Best: I didn’t read a single book this year, watched very few movies (the ones I saw were just OK), but I did see a moderate amount of TV, listened to some music, and spent most of my time on the internet. So my list is pretty random.

Here’s a makeshift list for 09. 2009 was a great year for chapbooks.  A couple of presses released multiple titles that I devoured such as BraveMenPress which released Janaka Stucky’s Your Name Is The Only Freedom, Chris Toneli’s No Theater, and Julia Cohen’s For The H In Ghost.

Stop Breaking Rules

A writer need not be familiar with, let alone understand, Aristotle’s Poetics in order to write excellent fiction. A writer does not need to master mimetic prose before composing non-mimetic prose of the first order. A writer does not need to understand what a narrative arc is, or what foreshadowing is, or what thematic development [...]
