Sorry to be so late on the conversation. I’d been working on my review of MLKNG SCKLS myself and I so I didn’t read the entire thing.

You know, since I was very familiar with what happened there in April 2004 I did think, unlike you, “about politics and battles and states and boundaries,” but even with that extraordinary burden on my conscience, I still felt that it didn’t obscure the story of “people moving through the world, looking, longing for something, wanting to be seen, wanting to be unique.” Sirois has a distinct voice that though it’s, like you say, “spare,” it is still “beautiful…[s]cary and lovely.”

I think the sense of being watched is really smart. I didn’t pick up on it (except for the obvious parts, with the laptop camera) when I was editing it, so I’m glad you did, Ginny. I mostly liked looking at, as Justin points out, how little I know about Iraq — and I pay attention. But I kept correcting him, saying like, “No, they don’t know about The Monkees over there.” Turns out, they do.
